National level consultation on sexual violence in Sri Lanka

CEJ organised a National Consultation on the 19th of June 2025, to ‘Address Sexual Violence Among Marginalised Communities in Sri Lanka’. The consultation was conducted in partnership with Equality Now and SAMAJ (South Asian Movement for Accessing Justice).  Human rights activists, civil society representatives, development practitioners, volunteers, UN representatives, and mental health professionals working with victim-survivors of sexual violence attended the consultation. The event featured a panel discussion with representatives from the Malaiyaha Tamil, Women with Disabilities, LGBTQIA+, and Fisher communities. During the panel discussion, panellists shed light on the prevalence of sexual violence within their communities and the barriers marginalised women encounter when seeking justice. The afternoon session included an experience-sharing segment, where participants from various civil society organisations engaged with the panellists and shared similar stories and case studies. Thereafter, an Attorney-at-Law delivered a presentation on the gaps within Sri Lanka’s current legal framework that hinder access to justice and mental health services for victim-survivors of sexual violence.
